Dato’ Mohamed Iqbal, aged 63, is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, London. He obtained a Bachelor of Economics degree with Honours in 1971 and a Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1973, both from the University of Malaya.
In addition, he holds a Certificate in Education from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, obtained in 1964; the International Management Teacher’s Programme (ITP) certificate from the joint programme organized by the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and the Centre D’Enseignment Superior Des Affairs (CESA), France obtained in 1978; Doctorate in Management in 1993 from the La Salle University, USA. In 1977, he led a team that won the Malaysian Young Managers Competition for work done to promote entrepreneurial management in Malaysia. The Malaysian Team led by him also won the Asian Young Managers Competition in the same year.
In further recognition of his entrepreneurial skill and programmes he was awarded the Sir Frederick Gallahan Memorial Award by the Australian-Malaysian Association of Australia in 1976. In 1995, he was awarded by His Royal Highness Sultanof Pahang, the title “Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang”, which carries the title “Dato” with his name.
In 1996, he was conferred the Jasa Cemerlang (‘JC’) title by the Malaysian Association of Youth Clubs(MAYC) for his service to the youth movement. Dato’ Mohamed Iqbal has been involved in Islamic activities from an early age. He was the President of the Islamic Union at the Malayan Teachers College, Brinsford Lodge, UK in 1962.
He was one of the founders of the Federation of Islamic Student Societies in United Kingdom and Eire and served as its first Executive Secretary and Editor of the Magazine “Risalatul Akhbar” from 1962-1964. Currently he is a Council Member of Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan and Chairman of its Audit Committee, and Vice-Chairman of Yayasan Pembangunan Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan. He served for four terms from 1984-1998 as a Trustee of Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia and was the Chairman of Perbadanan Wakaf Sdn. Bhd., an entity wholly owned by Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia. He was founder and current Chairman of Yayasan Pelajaran Islam, which administers amongst other activities, the “Anugerah Sastera Islam” – a project under taken together with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.
He also initiated the formation of Majlis Shura in 1997, a consultative body for Islamic issues and is currently its Deputy Chairman. Dato’ Mohamed Iqbal has served in the past as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Economics and Administration, University of Malaya; Corporate Finance Officer of Malaysian International Merchant Bank; Executive Director of Institute of Bankers Malaysia; Executive Chairman of Arab Asian Group; Council Member of the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) and concurrently held the position of MIM’s Vice-Chairman and Chairman of its Management Committee. In recognition of his services to management fraternity, in 2006 the MIM has elevated his status as a member of the Court of Fellows.
Dato’ Mohamed Iqbal is presently Group Executive Director of Farlim Group (M) Bhd a company listed in Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd and Managing Director of Bandar Subang Sdn Bhd. He is also the Chairman ofIqrah Holdings Sdn. Bhd and Permodalan Ikhtiar Sdn Bhd. He is also involved in business oriented regional bodies and serves as; Secretary-General of the Asean Business Forum and Secretary of the Malaysia-Japan Economic Association (“MAJECA”). Recently, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia-Pacific has appointed him as a member of its Business Advisory Council.
