Glen Armstrong is a co-founder of Sustainable Finance ltd. He worksextensively with private sector financial institutions andmulti-lateral agencies providing guidance on international bestpractice in sustainable development issues. His principle skills are inthe application of environmental and social development standards toinvestments in emerging markets and in building capacity within majorfinancial institutions through management processes, decision supportand in the training of financial professionals. Clients includeBarclays Capital, Citigroup, ABN AMRO Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland,Calyon , HSBC , ING, Inter-American Development Bank, JPMorganChase,WestLB and the World Bank. He has personally been involved intraining over 1500 finance professionals from over 20 major Banksin the application of environmental and social issues to decisionmaking. He is also an advisor to the Compliance Advisor/Ombudsmansoffice at the IFC and to the International Council on Minerals andMining (ICMM).From 2000 to early 2003 he was Senior Advisor: Sustainable Developmentto the IFC, the largest provider of funding to the private sector indeveloping countries in the World. In 2000 (Design of the IFCsustainability initiative) and again in 2003 (Developing ValuePublication) and 2004 (the Equator Principles) he received IFCcorporate awards for his work in this area. From 1997 to 2000 He washead of the IFC unit in Washington D.C. responsible for theenvironmental and social analysis of all IFC investments worldwide. Inthat role he was engaged in the leadership of teams reviewing some ofthe largest and most contentious private sector investments in theWorld and has worked throughout Africa , Asia , Central andEastern Europe and Latin America.On behalf of IFC in 2003 he facilitated private banks in thedevelopment of the Equator Principles, now the global benchmark inensuring the Sustainability of emerging market project finance. Hepresents widely on sustainability issues, including recently to theUNEP Global Roundtable, the G8 Environmental Futures Forum and theEuropean Infrastructure CongressPrior to joining IFC from 1993-97 he was Managing Director of Aspinwalland Company (now part of the Enviros group), one of the UKs leadingenvironmental management consultancies and from 1988-93 held a numberof Managerial and Director level positions with the Company. Histechnical background is in Public Health and Pollution Science and heworked as an Environmental Health Officer in London from 1979-1987. Heholds a first degree in Public Health and a Masters Degree in PollutionScience.
